Newcastle United full-back Stephen Carr has undergone a second operation in two months on his groin injury.

The 29-year-old Republic of Ireland international limped off the field at half-time in last Saturday's 1-0 defeat at Fulham in the Premiership in what was only his second match back in action following a hernia surgery in November.

The defender is likely to be out of action for at least a month.

Speaking to the club website, Toon boss Graeme Souness said: "Stephen has had an operation. We could have him back in three weeks, but in the worst case, who knows?"

Newcastle will also travel to Blackburn this weekend without Michael Owen, Scott Parker, Kieron Dyer, Shola Ameobi and Steven Taylor through injury, while Amady Faye remains away on international duty at the African Nations Cup with Senegal.

Turkish midfielder Emre and Magpies' centre-back Titus Bramble however, may well return to action, with the Scot adding: "Emre will train with us, then we'll see. We'll also take a look at Titus before Blackburn."

Scott Parker also has an "outside chance of being ready," added Souness - but if he was to miss the game, he would be back in action for the FA Cup tie away at Cheltenham.

"He is making good progress and we expect him to step things up over the next few days and then in the early part of next week."
