Newcastle United have today sacked boss Graeme Souness. Glenn Roeder has been installed as caretaker manager, while Alan Shearer will has been handed the role of his assistant.

GRAEME SOUNESS: "I'm saddened at the way things have worked out.

"I have enjoyed living and working in Newcastle, and my family and I have been made to feel particularly welcome by the Geordies.

"I wish the club, the players and the supporters good fortune and success going forward."

Meanwhile, assistant boss Dean Saunders has been suspended on full pay ahead of a meeting with the club to iron out a settlement.

And the official Newcastle website today announced that Glenn Roeder will take charge of first team affairs for the immediate future - and will be assisted by captain Alan Shearer.

The pair's first game will be Saturday's home Premiership game against Portsmouth at St. James' Park.

More to follow.
