Former Fulham and Sunderland midfielder Lee Clark has agreed to postpone a hernia operation in order to play out the remainder of the season as Newcastle United push for a place in the UEFA Cup.

Caretaker boss Glenn Roeder had asked Clark to delay going under the knife in order to feature in the final two league games of the season - with Scott Parker, Emre and Kieron Dyer already set to miss the games against Brimingham and Chelsea.

Glenn Roeder is delighted at the decision, and has confirmed he will undergo surgery in the summer.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Roeder said: "I've asked Lee to play on and, being the type of character he is, he agreed.

"Because of his hernia problems, he can't get through a full 90 minutes, but with our other midfielders injured, we need him. He'll have the operation as soon as the season's over."
