McCarthy Hails Special Win Against Old Side

Ipswich Town manager Mick McCarthy has admitted it was a special feeling to beat his former Wolverhampton Wanderers side 2-0 at Molineux in the Npower Championship thanks to goals from Aaron Cresswell and DJ Campbell.

Speaking at the post-match press conference, McCarthy could not hide his delight at the win: “I’d be a liar if I said it didn’t mean something special, because it did. My last game here I had to leave through the back door – and I’ll never forget that. That was a real horrible day for me.

"To have won and to have had the applause and ovation was nice. I think it shows what most Wolves fans really thought of me, as supposed to the minority that made me leave through the back door. The ones that were singing ‘Mick McCarthy out’ are doing it for Stale now. All I’ll say is, ‘be careful, you might get what you wish for.’

"That will be the lasting memory for me now though – being applauded off rather than leaving through the back door. Thank you to all of them that did that for me today."

Speaking of the game itself, the former Republic of Ireland boss said: “I thought we were excellent. I’m not bothered if Stan Cullis had been sat in the stands, he couldn’t have said that they deserved to win today.

"Even the staunchest Wolves player or supporter couldn’t say we didn’t deserve that today. The game plan worked – I thought it was a good performance. They worked so hard and the players deserve credit for that. They put a real shift in.”
