Royle Challenges Westy
Ipswich Town manager Joe Royle has challenged Town midfielder Ian Westlake to make his way into the England under 21 squad this season.
The 20 year old scored 7 times in the league last season and played forty games but he was ignored by England under 21 coach Peter Taylor, but Joe Royle believes that Ian can make his way into the set up this season.
Joe has said that: “Ian has all the equipment for the game as a modern
midfielder and he can win the ball and score goals.
“He was a big
surprise last season and we were wondering how long it would take for him to be
a regular reserve player but he ended up player of the season and I have no
qualms about him being the fans' choice.
“The challenge for him is to go
on and take what he did and say, I want to be in the England
Under-21s.
“If he carries on playing regular football and maintains his
progress then I am sure Peter Taylor will get to know about him.
“We are
delighted with his progress but do not want to put too much pressure on
him.
“When everyone is fit I think he will play from the left but like most
midfield players he wants to play in the middle, He did very well last night and
finished the game stronger than anyone. He was right back to his best and I
thought he was very impressive.
“He is a very fit boy, aggressive and not
scared to tackle but has added goals to his game. His passing has improved
terrifically.”
