Aston Villa manager David O’Leary has denied there is any truth in rumours linking Darren Bent to the Midlands side.

The Villa boss had reportedly been lining up a £4million swoop for the England under21 international who has found the net five times season for Town when the January transfer window opens.

O’Leary: “There's absolutely no truth in it. I say all along, if we are to move this club forward we need five quality players. I couldn't put a figure on it but we need five to take the squad up to 18 players.

“Five quality players would make a hell of a difference. The squad all around needs strengthening because the facts are there.

“We can get players in for nothing but that is not going to challenge the club to try to move it up to sixth place.

“The big five teams up there haven't done it through kids. They've spent a lot of money.”
