Match Thread: Wolves v Sevilla - Europa League Quarter Final

By Wolves
August 11 2020

Wolves fans will be hoping their team can emulate the achievement of Manchester United by reaching the Europa League semi-final in tonight's game against Spanish side Sevilla

The view of most knowledgable spokespeople is that Wolves are definite underdogs going into tonight's game bearing in mind the achievements of Sevilla in this league in recent seasons. However it is also recognised that Wolves are always capable of picking up an unexpected result!!

Coach Nuno Espirito Santo will be without Jonny Castro Otto, who sadly sustained a serious knee injury during the last game, and Daniel Podence who is suspended. Ruben Vinagre will be expected to step in for Jonny, whilst either Diogo Jota or Pedro Neto are the likely replacements for Podence. It will be interesting to see whether Nuno sticks to his tried and tested line-up or has something else up his sleeve. What is beyond doubt is that Sevilla have a very varied and talented squad and it will take a mighty performance from Wolves to overcome them, for a place in the semi-finals against United which wil be played on Suinday.

Tonight's game will be screened by BT Sports channel 1 and kicks off at 8pm. The referee will be Daniele Orsato from Italy

This board will hopefully carry regular updates and members are encouraged to post their own observations for the benefit of those unable to watch the game.

Looking forward to this game and even though we are seen as the underdogs if we can avoid conceding early in the match and allow ourselves the chance to “grow” into it we have a chance to make the semifinals.
Hopefully Nuno will not be too conservative in his selection and setup, and will allow us the opportunity to put Sevilla under some pressure, not hoping that we can defend for the majority and catch them on the break.
Such a shame that Jonny and Podence are going to be absent.
What ever the result is we can all be proud of this teams achievements over the past 56? matches and during such terrible times.
Cmon lads.

We are underdogs, no shadow of a doubt but we know what our team are capable of producing.

As we improve, season on season, I hope we are subjected to many more occasions such as tonight, it is absolutely what it is all about. Personally I hope our next one is versus Manchester United at the weekend ...... it is most definitely possible.

Whatever happens this evening, they have all done us proud. That’s not defeatist in the slightest ..... we have a great team that has given us a great deal of joy. I, like others, just we hope we can produce somewhere near our best this evening, I think we’ll have to.

UTW!

Two enforced changes for tonight's starting Xl - as expected Vinagre starts in place of the injured Jonny, and Donk starts in place of Podence Line-up:

Well here we are, a QF of a main European trophy. When I joined this board, it was 2007 and I was arguing with Floyds street feet about whether making the championship playoffs would constitute a good season.

Sevilla are favourites but beatable, their away record is very modest and although not an away game they aren't at the Ramon Sanchez either. I have just put £100 on wolves to win the whole thing at 13-1 - speculative but ridiculous odds when you consider utd are just under 3.

I will be watching Hesgoals, but if the stream dies, if anyone gets a decent stream I would hope they can put it on the main match thread as we are all watching /listening bar oldngold. I dont have crappy BT sports and we all know what streams are like ....let battle commence (Sm138) (Sm137) (Sm71) (Sm33)

Pattern of play much more as predicted, Seville possession growing but decent Wolves defending and always the potential for a break.

Seville goes wide and no I didn’t see a drinks break either

Poor play from CC & Boly leads to conceding a corner. Neves gets an arm in the face & free kick.
Sevilla are also defending well and tend to quickly rob Adama or Raul when they present any threat with the ball
One added minute 0 - 0

Half time and all level. Should have been 1-0 up, but their Keeper saved well from Raul’s penalty. Fairly even after that, although I’m sure Sevilla will have had much more possession. All to play for in the next 45

Lots of BT chat that the penalty should have been retaken as the back part of the keepers heal was not on the line when Jimenez kicked the ball ............. another new VAR rule to loom forward to. Joy, more micrometer stuff. If that’s the case however , it should have been retaken and the VAR ref missed it.

It gets worse, clear encroachment when the penalty was taken.

There was no question about that, none whatsoever

100% should have been retaken

The scoreline isnt embarrassing but the performance was.. probably for the best we arent in Europe next season if we dont have more to offer than that although Sevilla are a top team. All over and our European journey ends with a 0 - 1 loss to Sevilla. We were never really at the races in truth and never looked like scoring. Raul missed a penalty which may have given us a platform to go on, but we can’t rely on penalties can we.
A poor match from our team in my view - one step too far.
Oh well that’s our season finished for a few weeks! It will be interesting to see how Man Utd cope with Sevilla

Couldn’t fault how we started but as time wore on the class side showed. A very good season petered out in the end. A classic damp squib. Too many tepid performances post lockdown and whilst anything can happen in a cup match, we are never looked likely after about 20 minutes tonight.

Yes the penalty should have been retaken, most definitely, but to win matches at a high level, or any level for that matter, we cannot rely on just one chance and then defend for our lives. I will say this however, I thought our defenders did so well but he ball just kept coming back. Zero outlet. There is no way we could have won that cup doing the same every match as tonight, and to a certain but lesser extent, what we did versus Olympiakos.

The best Side won tonight, no question but I am truly disappointed we didn’t put on a better show. Personally, I found the whole thing slightly surreal if honest ........ maybe a bad dream. I was far more upset with our FA Cup semi final defeat last year by a long way. Oh, to get back to watching football in the flesh.

So our mammoth record breaking season is finally over, only about 4-5 weeks and we’re off again.

UTW!!

Raul usually takes such a good penalty that I feel really confident but this one was a shocker. Missing is one thing but taking one like that is something else. Not having a dig at Raul overall, he had no service tonight and has had a great season.
I thought we defended well but had nothing going forward. They've been on the go since last July and was this the 59th or 60th match of the season or something? More matches than anyone else and against a side of Sevilla's quality obviously it turned out to be too much.
A bitter disappointment and I have to say that I am starting to get to the point of having had enough. After all the rubbish I watched over the years when we were trash and now we are good, you build your hopes up but we can't get over the finishing line. The FA Cup last season and now this.
All a bit of a knee jerk reaction I suppose and tomorrow I'll probably fell differently and ready to go again. UTW.

Sevilla are a class outfit, hopefully they win the thing perhaps putting things into perspective that we at least lost to the winners.

We have had a great season but I'm not sure where we go from here to close the gap on the top teams. Regardless of league results , we're a million miles from that level and if it wasn't for heroic defending Sevilla would have won by a landslide. Jimenez doesnt have the pace to be a top striker despite being an excellent hold up man, Jota is a mid table prem player at best, with Moutinho/Nevez always ceding possession to teams with the latters party trick of blasting from 100 yards out becoming tiresome. Our defence is excellent and proved to be the case again tonight but after an hour I felt like we were 4-0 down even at 0-0 as it was obvious there was only going to be one winner

Reinforcements are a must. All things being equal, I’d want to see an attacking midfielder to come in and play centrally, or a midfielder that can better link up play and be a threat in their own right.

Naturally, things may not be equal, key players Might leave

Gutted about result last night but we have come so far in a short space of time. Sevilla were just a class above we that's for sure, you can see why they have won this cup so many times that's for sure. We started pretty well but once we missed the penalty it was all downhill after that. We could just not get hold of the ball and create anything. We defended really well but when the ball keeps coming back at you like it was law of averages they were going to get a decent chance just a shame it came so late. No complaints we were second best all over the pitch tonight and just shows the gap we have to make up to compete with these elite European clubs. To be honest I don't think we have played well in many games since returning from lockdown. The team looks shot and it certainly looked like the 59 games have caught up with them, but even at our best sevilla would of been a tough nut to crack tonight. Now the wait to see who comes and who goes in the team, we certainly need 4 or 5 quality signings. Oh message to the idiot in the var room your wake up alarm has just gone off!

I dont think the 59 games has anything to do with it tbh as the covid break was longer than any end of season one meaning the restart was effectively a new season. I highly doubt a game against Olympiakos which was our last one before the Covid nonsense on the 12th March left players tired kicking off on the 20th June.
