Goalkeeper deal agreed?
By Andy Baggott
July 6 2011
Leeds look close to sealing a deal for Preston goalkeeper Andy Lonergan. The number 1 position is currently up for grabs, with the departure of Kasper and Shane Higgs. Leeds have already signed former Blackpool 'keeper Paul Ruchabka, and if Lonergan signs it would appear to be a straight battle for the number 1 jersey.
A fee of around £200,000 is expected to seal the deal, although add ons could see it rise considerably.
Lonergan lost his place towards the back end of last season as Preston were relegated, although he was the fans player of the year for the previous campaign. IF the deal is agreed, ot's expected to be announced today or tomorrow...

i really give up, bates and grayson have no ambition, im feds up with it, we sell a keeper who in my mind was very unlucky had he had a better back 4 then maybe it would have been different story. we go replace quality with 2nd rate keepers, i really dont understand what goes on in bates head sometimes, but if this is what we can expect in future then we can forget play-off i think it be a bottom half of table jobby come end of new season.

lonergan is more highly rated than Kasper and the premiership interest shown by everton now and west brom in januray(they had a bid of 1.5 million rejected) for him shows that.
people have to realise it is quite obvious that he was going to become stale with no competition at preston, they didnt even have a number 2 keeper to push him ffs i for one will be happy with this deal, it was only 18 months ago he was rated as one of the best keepers outside the premier league.

Kasper was so good that he went to Leicester! No prem teams came knocking when the news broke about him being available did they? Give the new guys a chance to prove themselves.

If kasper was that good someone like swansea who needed a keeper would have signed him for just 1million. We all know kasper was really not that good.

Whatever we say about Kasper, the fact remains that he let in 70 goals in 46 matches. Of course he is not responsible for all these, but he was responsible for a few. The two keepers we will have now are not worse than the two we got rid off. Where Grayson should be judged on rebuilding is how he strengthens our back four and our midfield. That is where some quality is urgently needed.

I'll have to wait ans see about these two new keepers we have got. I think I am slowly warming to the idea of them, both are experienced in the championship and we should have two keepers fighting for the number one jersey which didnt happen with higgs and kasper

It doesn't matter who we sign as goalkeeper if we keep the same defence. Let's hope the cash is spent on some quality outfield players.

Is it actually the defence or the style of play. Often the back four were exposed by gung ho attacking which left them very expossed as the midfield pushed forward....and often didnt get back.
Kasper wanted to go its simple. He was messing around and showed no interest in signing another contract unless it was for a great deal more money.
I think he was a cocky arrogant tw** and we are well shut of him.

kasper was living on his daddys name
he will never be as good as him that was proven last season with some of the easy goals he let in last season and could not control his six yard box like any goal keeper learns to do at school

Well Lonergan won't improve you in that area. He never moves off his line.

on the face of it it's not exactly a signing that inspires confidence. But we shall have to wait and see. I'm going to put my faith in Grayson.

I've posted a few times giving you an honest opinion about Lonergan. I'll say no more and let you enjoy the displays of this brilliant keeper you're about to sign.

How come this lad was voted player of the year in 2009/2010 season PNE? The fans obv rated him that season. Preston were a very poor team collectively last season so you can't blame the keeper solely for the number of goals let in
I'd rather judge a keeper on what he has done in the recent past. McCormack was the top scorer in the championship a few years ago so i guess its all about getting the best out of the players we sign and getting them back to their best. If we can do this with this lad it would be a good signing but then again if our defence are as leaky as sieve next season we could have Cech in goal and he would let in quite a number of goals

andy lonergan last season league stats
played 29 conceded-53 1.82 goals conceded per game
...........................................
ian turner(lonergans replacement at PNE)
played 17 conceded 24 1.41 goals conceded per game
............................................
kasper last season.league stats
played-37 conceded-51 1.37 goals conceded per game
...................................................
i know stats dont paint the full picture but i dont think our defense was that much better than preston last season, they had billy jones and sean st ledger in their defense who i would rate higher than most of our defenders.
i havent seen much of lonergan play but from what the preston fans say he sounds like an older version of kasper.
i think it was good business getting rid of kasper and not letting him leave on a free but if we sign lonergan as our new number 1` i dont think its an improvement on ks like grayson and bates said it would be.

I wasnt being too harsh with him just that theres already been another PNE fan on here stating that PNE78 is anti-Lonergan, Osama. He has stated his opinion on several post now. It was just starting to smell of sour grapes. But if you feel the need for sour wine mate !.

Andy lonergan and preston also faced twice as many shots as any other team/goalkeeper.

who guessed schmeical and gonzalez last year?
i'm hoping that we may have two other goalies lined up though if Lonegran proves to be 2/3 choice I wouldn't be too unhappy. Whether he is a genuine number 1, I'm not really sure if I'm honest.
Connolly and lichaj proved better than expected
O'Brien livermore, McCcartney et al less so.
I will keep an open mind.
